Many of today’s new moms are learning about the benefits of a doula — a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth.
Doulas are different from midwives in that they do not directly intervene in the birth, but rather, their role is one of emotional support and comfort. Like midwives, doulas will meet with their patients both before and after birth, ensuring that a relationship of trust is built and maintained. Doulas provide comfort with pain-relief techniques including breathing techniques, relaxation methods, massage, and laboring positions. Doulas also encourage participation from the partner and offer reassurance. These partnerships are sought out and initiated at the patient level, but the physicians and staff at Emory Decatur Hospital are supportive of the role they play in your birth experience.
